The heaviest of the seven

Indonesian oud is dark, dense and unapologetic. Bold spice at the opening, woody smoke and leather through the middle, and a balsamic resin base that stays put. If you find most oud too polite, this is the one.

Ours is grown, not taken from wild forest. The trees are planted and tended, wounded deliberately, then left for years while the resin forms. No wound, no agarwood — it is the tree's own defence, and nothing else produces it.

What it smells like

  • Opening: bold spice, fresh green herbs
  • Middle: woody smoke, earthy leather
  • Base: deep balsamic resin, sweet grass, warm musk

It has the highest resin content of anything we carry, which is why it lasts as long as it does and why a single drop is genuinely enough.

A different tree

Most oud comes from Aquilaria. The agarwood species native to these islands is Gyrinops, a close relative — and part of why Indonesian oud smells unlike anything else in the range.

How to wear it

  • One drop is plenty. This is the least forgiving oil we sell if you overdo it.
  • Give it ten to fifteen minutes before you judge it. The opening is not the scent.
  • Evening and cold weather suit it. In heat it can become overwhelming.
  • Expect ten to twelve hours on skin, sometimes longer on clothing.

How it compares

This is the far end of the range. Heavier than Malaysian, darker than Cambodian, and a long way from the lightness of Laos. It is not where we would suggest starting, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong bottle.

What you are buying

100% agarwood oil. No synthetics, no alcohol, no dilution. Nothing added and nothing taken away.

We buy directly from the small distillers who make these oils, in the regions where the agarwood grows. It is slower than going through a broker, and it means more of what you pay reaches the people who did the work.

Each oil is rested until it has matured, then bottled in London and packed for delivery worldwide.

New to oud? Start with the Discovery Set — four origins, 1ml of each. Indonesian is not among them, and for a first bottle that is deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

What does Indonesian oud oil smell like?

Bold spice and green herbs at the opening, then woody smoke and leather, settling into balsamic resin and warm musk. Dark and dense rather than sweet.

How long does it last on skin?

Ten to twelve hours, and longer on clothing. It has the highest resin content of the seven.

Is Indonesian oud good for beginners?

Honestly, no. It is the heaviest oil we carry. Start with Thai or Cambodian, or the Discovery Set, and come to this one once you know what you like.

Is the agarwood wild or grown?

Grown. The trees are planted and tended, then wounded deliberately. None of our oud is taken from wild forest.

Is your Indonesian oud oil 100% pure?

Yes. 100% natural agarwood oil, with no synthetic additives, alcohol or dilution.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes, with free UK delivery. See the full collection.

A RARE UNFORGETTABLE FRAGRANCE

They are extracted from Agarwood resins in a process that it withholds unique fragrances enlightening one's mood and soul.

What pure actually means

Every oil we sell is 100% agarwood. No synthetics, no alcohol, nothing added to soften it. We buy directly from the small distillers who make these oils, in the regions where the trees are grown and tended, and each one is rested until it has matured before we bottle it in London. It is a slower way of working than going through a broker, and it is the only way we can tell you honestly what is in the bottle.

Seven origins, one tree

Every oil in our range comes from the same tree, Aquilaria. Soil, climate and time do the rest, and the difference between regions is not subtle. Cambodian is sweet and almost caramel. Indian is earthy and herbal. Laos is light and floral. Indonesian is dark and dense. Most people find one they return to and stop looking, and which one that is has very little to do with price.
